Laskar Pelangi, one of Indonesia’s Best Selling novels that I admire was become a movie now. It was one of many other that influences me to study in Europe, and now here I am, in Europe studying my Master degree. Hope they can make Laskar Pelangi goes to one of the European Film Festival here, if not I have to be patient to watch it next year.

Fly to Bolzano (belated post :p) October 22, 2008

Filed under: life, scholarship — sweetiena @ 3:31 am

It was in September the 23rd 2008. I left my home country, Indonesia, to continue my study abroad in Italy. It was the first time I go abroad. Fortunately, I’m not going alone. I left with my friend Josef (EMSE 2nd year) and Fati (EMSE 1st year) who also will continue their study in the same university as mine.

I packed my baggage, but I don’t know what to bring. So I just brought some clothes for a week, because some of my friends said that they prefer to buy clothes there, it will suit the fashion there. It’s Italy anyway. A fashionable country XD I also brought soy sauce, abon, jacket, scarf, small bag, my cell phone (because they also use GSM there), and some other (if you want to ask anything about what to pack hopefully I can help ^^). So I weighted my baggage and it was 20 kg, 5 kg less than I can carry to the plane. So it was okay. I also brought a small bag in my waist to put some money and important documents like passport, so that it will always be near me anytime. I also brought a large backpack to put my laptop, jacket, important document, etc.

My plane will took off at around 23PM (Indonesian time) at night. It was a red-eye flight. So I came 4 hours earlier to the airport. My family and my luv were accompanying me at the airport. It was my mother, my father, my two brothers, my sister, and my cousin. Some of my friends were also coming. There were vara, amel, aria, jeab, and kura. God! It broke my heart so badly, to be far away from home. But I was sure that time was just the beginning of my new life adventure.

After very hard goodbyes, I got into the plane. It was a big Qatar Airways plane (I took it because it was the cheapest one XD). They have movies on board, so that you cannot be bored on the flight and they served foods (a lot XD). And because it was cheap, it went around the globe XD. Once I left Jakarta, the plane stopped in Singapore for 1 hour and we stayed on the plane. We continued the flight to Doha, Qatar for about 8 hours. And we got out the plane there. We stayed at the airport for about 7 and a half hour.

Doha is a very dry city compare to Indonesia. And it was very hot outside. It was a great airport, tidy and clean. I planned to meet my high school friend who coincidently working in Qatar. But unfortunately we cannot meet because he will not be able to come inside the airport. Maybe next time I will stay for a while in Qatar, just to see the city XD

We met another fellow flight from Bangladesh, named Taslim (EMSE 1st year). Taslim will go to the same university as we are. So after we had we added him up to the group, there are 4 of us. And then we took the same flight to Milan (Malpensa) together. The flight took for about 6 and a half hour.

We arrived at Milan 7PM (Italian time). Then suddenly I feel the difference of Milan and Jakarta, a lot of nude pictures that will surely be banned if it was in Indonesia XD I was started to feel the cold weather of Europe. We met another friend from India, named Usman (EMSE 2nd year). Then, there are 5 of us. We stayed at the airport until very early in the morning to catch the train at Milan Central Station. We went to the station by taking a shuttle bus from Milan Malpensa Airport.

In the station we bought the ticket and searched for the right train. We take the train for 3 and a half hour to Bolzano. The compartment was like in Harry Potter movies XD but with full of our big baggage and luggage XD We arrived in Bolzano safely. How about Bolzano? Let me tell you in on the next posts… see you soon. Ciao…

Recap: [Jakarta, Indonesia] – [Singapore, Singapore] – [Doha, Qatar] – [Milan, Italy] – [Bolzano, Italy]

[Info] Pembuatan Paspor (tanpa Calo) di Jakarta June 24, 2008

Filed under: life, scholarship — sweetiena @ 6:54 am

This blog entry is about the steps to get an Indonesian passport in Indonesia. This information based on my own experience that done in East Jakarta Imigration Office and for a scholarship purpose. Do not forget to pay attention on this blog entry date, because it might be changes in the future. Since this information is more valuable for Indonesian people, so I make this entry blog in Bahasa Indonesia.

Pengurusannya bisa memakan waktu kira-kira 6 hari kerja jika tidak ada masalah seperti kekurangan dokumen atau kantor imigrasinya mati lampu (it happens to me :( so I should come back the next day). Normalnya sih cuma butuh 3 kali kunjungan ke kantor Imigrasi.

Kunjungan Pertama (Pengumpulan formulir)
- Fotokopi KTP
- Fotokopi Kartu Keluarga
- Fotokopi Akte Kelahiran
- Fotokopi Ijazah Sarjana (karena saya mau S2)
- Fotokopi Surat keterangan penerimaan beasiswa

- Lem buat nempelinnya
- Alat tulis (buat ngisi formulir)

Sampai disana cari tempat penjualan formulir pembuatan paspor.

Kunjungan Kedua (Foto + Sidik Jari + Wawancara)
Yak!

Kunjungan Ketiga (Pengambilan paspor)
Kunjungan terakhir! The passport is all yours :D

XD

Selamat membuat paspor! XD

Hakama June 9, 2008

Filed under: aikido — sweetiena @ 3:44 pm

English Version? Coming soon…
Available also at www.aikido.web.id (unfortunately only in Bahasa Indonesia)

Scholarship Part III: Linger May 21, 2008

Filed under: life, scholarship — sweetiena @ 6:47 am

My PUSILKOM job was finish, and I was unemployed. The two companies were waiting for my news about the scholarship and working in their companies. And I haven’t got any news. But I believe Allah has a way for me.

I always wonder how is it like to work in a fast paced company or to be precise Accenture. Because I experience the contrary between my Accenture (ACN) interview and a scholarship email and it was a thing that I was afraid of, like I write in “Scholarship Part II”.

Accenture

I got a call from ACN. They wanted to employ me as a contractor employee for five weeks. See… Allah has a way for me. Allah gives me an opportunity to experience it and eliminate my curiosity. Alhamdulillah. It was a fun five weeks knowing an expensive SAP System with a bunch wacky team XD. Love them all.

The Email

I still hadn’t got any email from the Consortium, the said on their last email that they will give me news on 2nd or 3rd week of April. But it was the end of April and my Contract will be over soon. I finish my work and I become unemployed once more. On 7th of May, I became impatient. I emailed the consortium and ask them about it. Alhamdulillah they replied it at the same day. They told me that they received news from EU couple hours before. What a coincidence. And they tell me that I got the grant. Once again Alhamdulillah :)

And now, I am in the middle of getting all the information that I can get for my study in Italy and Czech and also waiting for the documents to arrive. And once again linger.

I hope readers found my blog entries about the beginning of my scholarship helpful.

Cheers and the end (for now),
Tina

Hypnotism (or not?) May 21, 2008

Filed under: life — sweetiena @ 6:45 am

I was on my way to Plaza Senayan (PS). I went there by TransJakarta Bus. I love this bus, it’s comfortable. Even in rush hours, this bus is much comfortable except if you have another shortest track. It was a lovely day and I’m in a very good mood :)  It was Saturday, I had my great Aikido course in the morning, I had taken a good bath, and I was on my way to go bowling and billiard with some friends. What a lovely day huh? What can I expect more? :)

So, I was on TransJakarta. I take the 4th corridor (Pulogadung – Dukuh Atas). It was such a lovely day. Although I was standing because I didn’t get any seat left, I was alright and even humming a song all the way. And I was going to reach Dukuh Atas Shelter. What I know is that everyone on the bus will leave the bus on that shelter, so there is no need to rush.

It’s okay until I got a pat on my shoulder by a stranger man beside me. He told me “Ayo turun Mbak (Let’s get out this bus Mbak)”. I immediately said Astagfirullah. I don’t know him. Who the hell is he? Everyone on the bus will eventually get out the bus, what is the rush for? He’s kinda cute person and dress tidily, not dressed badly (but there is no rule saying that a bad person dressed badly though), so I thought he was mistaken me with somebody else that he know. But I was also afraid if he was going to hypnotize me. I don’t want to think negatively, it was such a lovely day to spoil.

So I got out the bus. That man was standing in front of me like he was waiting for me. I waited for him to go first but he won’t. So I tried to go ahead of him and took the transit bridge first. He immediately went behind me. Now I thought he was a burglar, so I keep my bag and my cell phone away from him. He began to make a conversation.

The strange man (TSM): “Mau ke arah Blok M atau ke Kota Mbak? (Do you want to go to Blok M or Kota Mbak?)”

Okay, I thought he was an ordinary man and this is his first time taking the bus. So I good heartily offered him a help.

Me: “Mmm… Blok M… Kenapa mas? Mas ga tau jalannya? (Mmm… Blok M. What is it mas? Mas don’t know the way?)”
TSM: “Enggak, cuma mau ngikutin Mbak aja (No, I just want to follow you)”

Okay that was creepy. So I walked faster ahead of him, I was late anyway. And he followed me.

TSM: “Mbak lagi mau main apa kerja? (Are you going to hang out or working?)”
Me: “Mmm… Main…”

Okay that was my line. And I ran like I was catching the next bus. I took the next bus before him. Fiuh… What a strange scene and a strange man.

By the way, the rest of the day went great, plus I have this story that I can share with my friend all day long that day :)

Scholarship Part II: Job or Scholarship Hunting? May 16, 2008

Filed under: life, scholarship — sweetiena @ 11:27 am

And I graduate. I still keep thinking that it would be great if I can continue my study. Beside I’m still curious about my Bachelor Thesis (BT), which I found still not satisfying, because I still feel like I can do more of it. But like many of my friends that are already working or still hunting for a job. It looks like it’s time for me to work too. Since I haven’t found a perfect job, I work at the faculty as a junior System Analyst.

PUSILKOM University of Indonesia

PUSILKOM is an IT company of the faculty. I worked there as a junior System Analyst and applying for another job at the same time. Options and offers were coming and I was still curious.

One day I talk to Pak Ari. I told him that I am afraid if one day I got the opportunity to study abroad and I got the perfect job that I can’t neglect at the same time. Pak Ari encouraged me to still try to pursue for scholarship. He said that it would make my curiosity disappear because at least I have tried. And he also said do and just thinking what you can do best today, because you will never know what future is prepared for you. Beside Pak Ari, there are also some friends who always encourage me to pursue for the scholarship, Fajar and Pras, what best friends they are :D  They are the top two of my year of graduation. And so, because of the encouragement from Pak Ari, Fajar and Pras, I was preparing all the documents needed for Erasmus Mundus Language and Communication Technology (EM LCT) Master Program. Fortunately because I was working in the faculty, it was easy for me to finish all the documents administration, I don’t have to search time between work days to go to the faculty :) All the documents are all set (Thanks to Pak Ruli and Pak Stef for the recommendation letters) except for the TOEFL.

TOEFL

According to the information on the website, I have to take a TOEFL test. I have taken an Institutional Paper-Based TOEFL in PPB (Language Center Service) University of Indonesia and my score pass. And I emailed the consortium that what I have here is the institutional one and can I submit that. The answer was I can’t submit it and I have to take the international one. To get an International TOEFL exam you must have the money, a credit card, and the most crucial is time. Because it would take at least 2 weeks before you can see the score online… yup online… and you have to wait another 2 weeks to get the score card. So time is ticking. The deadline is 15th of January and the best I could do is to take TOEFL exam on 13th of January… yup… that means I will be late. I emailed the consortium once more. I asked whether I could submit the TOEFL later on after I am being accepted. They replied no, I can’t, because the TOEFL score is one of the factors that count. But they give me extra time to sit on the test and they will check on ETS database at the end of the month for my score, for that I should tell them my ETS ID. So I take the test on the 13th of January in Bandung… yup it was in Bandung not in Jakarta, so I have to go to Bandung.

I go to Bandung with my mother, my sister and my ‘upa’ (a far family member from my father’s family). I go to Bandung to take the test and visiting my younger brother who is studying in ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung).

And at the end of the month my score pass (fiuh…) and that was the end of my documents submission for the scholarship.

The First Email

It was 19th February 2008. I was going to the second interview for a job in a company (ACN) and I checked on my email on my cell phone. There was an email from the consortium that my proposal for the scholarship was forwarded to EU for the grant. They asked me whether I agree or not if they change the study place to Bolzano, Italy and Prague, Czech (I was choosing Germany and France before), oh well… it doesn’t matter (a lot XD).
I forwarded the email to Pak Stef and Pak Ruli, and guess what? The congratulate me :|  I was surprise I haven’t got the grant but they congratulate me… oh well… it’s really up to them actually. And I went to the interview.

The Interviews

Okay, the interview (ACN) gone well, I honestly tell them that I am pursuing a scholarship, and also the other interviews. I thought it was fair to them. And 2 companies accepted me (see “I rejected two companies in less than two weeks” blog entry, not ACN though).

What I do next…? Let’s find out in Scholarship Part III blog entry. See you soon.

Scholarship Part I: My Bachelor Thesis May 9, 2008

Filed under: life, scholarship — sweetiena @ 11:51 am

As one of my lecturers suggests me to improve my English writing skill, so I want to start writing my blog in English. I really appreciate if you tell me when you find any error on my writing. Okay, now I want to tell you about my scholarship story. Let’s begin…

My Bachelor Thesis Proposal Story

It starts from about one year ago when I decided to make a Bachelor Thesis (BT) instead of doing a student project as part of my graduation criteria. I wanted to make a BT on Cryptography because I have taken a fun and great Cryptography class by Mr. Ari Saptawijaya (Pak Ari) on my previous semester. So I asked him to guide me on my BT before the next semester start. But unfortunately he had to go to Portugal the next semester. He suggested me to ask Mr. L. Y. Stefanus (Pak Stef), who is also one of my lecturer and my academic advisor, who happens to be a great lecturer and also great at Cryptography. So I came to him and asked him if he may guide me on my BT. He agreed and I can start by reading one of previous student BT as a reference.

So started reading and finished my entire task in that semester before I begin the next semester of doing BT. I had to finish an Internship on that semester and to finish an internship, I had to do a presentation as a finale. Pak Stef was one of my internship presentation judges, because he is my academic advisor. When I finished the whole presentation and got the score (it was an ‘A’ :p), he told me that he couldn’t be my BT advisor because he also had to go to Portugal and Germany. He suggested me that I could ask one of great new lecturers, and one of them is Mr. Ruli Manurung (Pak Ruli) who happens to be his previous student and he was advising Pak Ruli BT. I was thinking that, is it really this hard to get a BT topic that I wanted, since I have to switch between 3 lecturers :(  But it was a beginning of a great big thing! :D

My Computational Linguistic Thesis Story

I found (and not just me) Pak Ruli is a charming lecturer, in a good way, and he is very smart and kind :p Just ask everybody who knows him. When I ask him about could he become my BT advisor, he told me that he was not really great at Cryptography and if I wanted to stick with Cryptography, he and I would have to learn it together on the way. He was majoring at Computational Linguistic or Natural Language Processing, so I was thinking why would I forcing him to be my BT advisor on Cryptography if I can learn a lot of Computational Linguistic from him. So I change my topic to Computational Linguistic, an alien topic that I haven’t heard before. He offered me a topic in Computational Linguistic, that I found very interesting, and I had to do a lot of reading and learning to catch up.

Information Retrieval Research Group (IRRG), University of Indonesia

Because of my BT, I was joining the IRRG with the other student who had similar kind of topic, around Information Retrieval (IR) and Computational Linguistic. And my love one was also joining that Research Group. What a wonderful life I have :D  So I was learning Computational Linguistic especially on its application in Bahasa Indonesia, my national language, using ‘Syntax-Driven Semantic Analysis’ method to be particular. And I was inspired by my love one BT, Statistical Question Answering IR. So I combine them all and my BT title is “Syntax-Driven Semantic Analysis and Its Application towards Question Answering”, a non statistical Question Answering.

Joining the IRRG was a very great experience. We usually held a weekly discussion focusing on sharing the knowledge that we gain during research or ask for help if we meet difficulties on our work. And I happy to be part of the IRRG team (although I do a very small part of it) on ‘Gelar Ilmu’, an University of Indonesia knowledge and innovation event that was being attended by Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia.

Proceeding Paper on PACLING 2007

My great BT advisor, Pak Ruli, offered me to make a paper about my research on my BT. So we compose a paper together and put it on 10th Conference of The Pacific Association for Computational Linguistic (PACLING 2007). It was accepted and the proceeding paper title is “Towards a Semantic Analysis of Bahasa Indonesia for Question Answering”. You can find it here.

Erasmus Mundus Language and Communication Technology (EM LCT) Master Program

I know some friend who got the Erasmus Mundus (EM) grant for his and her Master degree. And I was hoping if one day I could continue my education and at the same time go to other country such as countries in Europe. So I browsed the courses that EM was offering. And I found Language and Communication Technology (LCT) Master Program that offers subjects like Information Retrieval and Computational Linguistic. And at that time I decided if one day I want to pursue the EM opportunity I will choose EM LCT Master Program.

My Bachelor Thesis Presentation

My BT Presentation went great. And I got a great score (it was an ‘A’ once again :p).
And I graduate. Is it time for me to find a job or continue my education? Let’s find out in Scholarship Part II blog entry. See you soon.
